Walking Tour of Old Madrid

Tour days:  Sunday, Wednesday, Friday

Collection points:  09.30, Spain Square

Duration:  5 hours

The tour starts at Puerta del Sol (Square of the Sun), a large and important central location where we can see the zero point at the entrance to the old post office.  From this point distances are measured to places all over Spain.

We begin our tour of the ancient sites of Madrid in the 500-year old Placa Mayor, once the site of bullfights and the Auto Da Fe ceremonies where families of Anussim Jews were burned at the stake under the orders of the Inquisition.  We pass by the Knives Gate  and the world’s oldest restaurant, Casa Botin.

Leaving through the Crucifix Gate we reach the largest tapas market in the world, San Miguel, a covered market where we will pause to taste some of their special tapas.  The tour continues to the old Municipal building dating from the 16th century.  We make our way to the old Madrid Opera House, and from there to the Bridge of Segovia, called “the bridge of suicides”.  The tour ends in the gardens of the Royal Palace
