Manchester City’s most successful period was in the late 1960’s early 1970’s having won the league title, the FA cup, the league cup and the European cup winners’ cup. After losing the 1981 FA cup final the club went through a period of decline culminating in a relegation to the third tier of English football. More recently, having gained promotion back into the top flight, Manchester City was bought in 2008 by ADH Group and have now become one of the wealthiest football clubs in the world.
Since 2011, Manchester City have won 6 major honors. Most notably, the Premier League twice.
Manchester City FC is currently one of the wealthiest football teams in the world – but it wasn’t always the case. After immense success in the 1960’s and 1970’s when the team triumphed in the FA Cup, League Cup, League Championship and European Cup Winners Cup things started to slide a little. In 1981 they lost the FA Cup Final and the slippery slope took them all the way down to relegation and third tier football in 1998. They fought back bravely back into the Premier League and the tables really turned in 2008 when the team was bought out and became extremely wealthy. The injection of cash and hence World class players soon made its mark on the field and they won the FA Cup once again in 2011 followed by the Premier League the following year – their first in 44 long years. One of the most prolific of all modern city players must surely be Irishman Richard Dunne who spent almost a decade at City before moving on to pastures new. During that time he was voted Player of the Year four years in succession between 2004 and 2008 – the first player ever to achieve this. Championships Manchester City has collected lots of titles and silverware over the decades, to date namely: 4 x Premier League titles 5 x FA Cups 3 x Football League Cups including 2013 – 2014 season 4 x FA Community Shield 1 x UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Top Scorer You have to look a long way back in the history books to find the most prolific goal scorer at Manchester City FC. That honour goes to Eric Brook who scored a mighty 177 goals during his time at the club between 1928 and 1940. Bringing things a little more up to date and Francis Lee scored 148 goals in his time at City between 1967 and 1974 but the most abundant in recent years is Carlos Tevez who scored 73 City goals between 2009 and 2013. Wow Moment There are have been many “wow” moments in the history of Manchester City games but the team are credited by many football fans to also lay claim to the most amazing moment in the history of the Premier League. Looking back on the 2011 – 2012 season, City won the coveted title on what was virtually the final kick of the entire season. You don’t get much more “wow” than that now do you?
