Toledo, known as “Jerusalem of Spain”, is one of the world’s most impressive cities. We will travel south from Madrid to Toledo, an important landmark in the history of the Jewish people in the Spanish diaspora. We will begin with an amazing view of the city, which was the historic meeting place of the 3 monotheist religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Toledo is built on a hill and surrounded by the Tagus River which flows all year round and acted as a natural barrier. From the viewpoint we can see the Alcazar, the oldest cathedral in Spain, and the Jewish quarter.
We will start the guided tour in Zocodover Square and walk through the narrow streets pas the oldest Gothic Cathedral in Spain, the residence of the Archbishop. We will view the Bell Tower, and continue from the old wall to the Jewish quarter, La Juderia, passing the residence of the Abulafia family. We will pay an emotional visit to the El Transito Synagogue, named after Rabbi Shmuel Halevy and currently used as a museum of Spain’s Jewish heritage.
We will continue to the famous San Martin Bridge, and then leave the old city for a visit to the workshops producing damascene work, in which gold thread is inlaid into different metals to make various objects, including swords and weapons.
At the end of the visit we will return to the hotels in Madrid.
