We travel eastwards through Sierra de Guadarrama to visit the Valle de los Caidos (“Valley of the Fallen”), a site located between pine trees that commemorates the victims of the bloody 1936-1939 Civil War, in which a million citizens lost their lives. We will tour this impressive monument and the basilica hewn out of the rock to a depth of 330m, containing the tomb of the Fascist dictator, Generalissimo Franco. We will continue to a view of El Escorial, the vast museum in a palace built by Philip II who drained the Spanish treasury. Today the Palace serves as a memorial to the Golden Age of Spain following the discovery of the American continent by Christopher Columbus, which made Spain into Europe’s most powerful state from the 15th to the 17th centuries.
